Nightingale String Quartet is P2 Artist of the Year 2025
Holmboe and Langgaard's string quartets have become almost synonymous with the Nightingale String Quartet, thanks to their dedicated work and fantastic recordings. Now they receive the title of P2 Artist of the Year 2025.
Since 2007, the four musicians Gunvor Sihm and Josefine Dalsgaard (violin), Marie Louise Broholt Jensen (viola) and Louisa Schwab (cello) have played together under the name Nightingale String Quartet. The quartet has won numerous national and international competitions and awards, including (as the first ensemble ever) Gramophone's ‘Young Artist of the Year Award’ in 2025.
The quartet has a special passion for Danish music and is behind several highly ambitious recording projects. Their series of Rued Langgaard's complete string quartets helped put the outsider composer on the international spotlight and sent the quartet to the top with starred reviews in Gramophone and BBC Magazine, among others. In 2021, the quartet embarked on a major new recording project: Vagn Holmboe's complete string quartets, which, according to Gramophone, ‘could not have got off to a more promising start’. So far, three albums have been released with more on the way.
Now the Nightingale String Quartet receives the prestigious title of P2 Artist of the Year 2025, which includes radio broadcasts of several premieres of new works by Bent Sørensen and Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen, an inaugural concert with music and interviews broadcast live on P2 on Friday 14 March and participation in various portrait programmes on DR P2.
DR P2 writes in their motivation:
‘For almost 20 years, the Nightingale String Quartet has impressed with their intense interplay. It is characteristic that they responsively shape the music together, almost as if they were one organism. Gentle and delicate one moment, expressive and powerful the next. At the same time, the ensemble has a clear profile, with contemporary music by Danish composers at its centre. The string quartets of Vagn Holmboe and Rued Langgaard have become almost synonymous with the Nightingale String Quartet! The ensemble has a curious and fearless approach to everything they work with, and the quartet interprets and communicates at the highest level, whether it's premieres or quartet classics.’
