String Quartets nos. 1, 2 and 3
This world premiere recording of Paul von Klenau's (1883-1946) recently rediscovered string quartets sheds new light on a highly interesting figure in early 20th century music. The Danish-born composer left his native country to study and work in Germany and Austria, where he belonged to Alban Berg's circle of friends. Klenau's music accordingly maintains a fascinating tension between Late Romanticism and Early Modernism; operating, as has been said of Berg, in “the twilight of tonality”.Paul von KlenauString Quartet in E minor1 I Mässig bewegt 4:24 2 II Adagio (mit tiefer ruhiger Empfindung) 9:36 3 III Allegretto (mehr Andante als Allegro) 3:30 4 IV Allegro molto energisch 6:35 Paul von KlenauString Quartet No. 2 (1942)5 I Allegro (stürmisch bewegt) 4:46 6 II Andante 7:14 7 III Allegro vivace, leicht und flüchtig 3:09 8 IV Sehr lebhaft (alla breve) 3:49 Paul von KlenauString Quartet No. 3 (1943)9 I Stürmisch bewegt.
